🍁 November 2024

🎣 My second session of the day, on a small pond and just one bite

Like many stillwaters at the moment, the pond I visited this afternoon has been affected by the recent heavy rain, and that was reflected in the water clarity.

It was a horrible grey colour.

Although a small venue, I know where the deep (relatively speaking) section is.

At six-feet, it’s a lot deeper than you would expect if you just looked out on the pond.

Having said that, most of it is just a couple of feet or so.

It was a very short session, less than two hours.

I had one bite, that I would say was from a perch.

Unfortunately, when I struck, the line beneath the surface had caught on a submerged branch.

By the time I actually got through to the fish, it had gone.

You win some and you lose some.

Tackle, bait and tactics

Greys Prodigy TX 12’ rod. Shimano 3500M reel. Maxima Chameleon 4lb line.

Drennan 1.2g waggler. Drennan Super Specialist size 14 hook.

Fished a couple of rod-lengths from the bank in six-feet of water, I presented three red maggots over red/white maggots and brown crumb beneath overhanging trees.

Nature notes

I could hear a raven calling for some minutes before I finally saw it, as it decided to move on from the copse where it was.

I’m seeing a lot of ring-necked parakeets lately. On this occasion there were six noisy birds in trees alongside the pond.

Two grey herons flew in together, both looking to land on the pond but, when they saw me, they moved on.
