🎣 Starting the new month with a mini-jigging session on the Staffordshire/Worcestershire Canal

Although I had a busy day ahead of me, I still wanted to get some fishing in, especially as it was the first day of the month.

There’s nothing like starting off in the way that you intend to continue, is there?

The tightness, as far as time was concerned, combined with the fact that I’ve been enjoying my lure fishing of late, meant that I once again loaded the car with my mini-jigging gear.

I decided to visit the Staffordshire/Worcestershire Canal on this occasion.

It was extremely clear, to the extent where you could see all the leaves on the bottom.

I knew that it was going to be a challenge and that was the case, as I didn’t even get a nibble.

Having said that, there were no fish at all showing, not even small roach.

When you consider that I was there for first light, that puts everything into perspective, as far as a fish-less session is concerned.

I still recorded a video though, and on this occasion focused on the technique of lure fishing.

Tackle, bait and tactics

Greys G Lite 6’ Spin (4-8 lb), Fox Rage Ultron 2500 reel, 18lb Sufix 832 low vis green braid on reel.

Drennan Double Strength 10lb (1m) joined to the braid with a small swivel.

Micro jig head 0.7g, size 6 hook. Two-inch glider rubber fish.

All knots (3) blood knots.

With the canal being exceptionally clear, I fished to a far bank boat, a nearside vessel, underneath a bridge and next to a lock.

Casting around features won’t guarantee fish on the bank but it certainly makes the odds more favourable when the going is tough.

Nature notes while fishing

Flock of c.12 redwings passed overhead.

Grey wagtail landed alongside the canal.
