🗣️ Speaking at a careers event and the importance of character
My granddaughter is about to leave primary school and move on to secondary school and, to help them in their future choices, a careers morning was organised.
I was invited to go along to speak about my job and so, in reception, I joined a party planner, funeral director, a man who designs bridges, a lady who runs a sewing business and others.
We all remained seated in one place (so an identical format to parents’ evening), while small groups of children then joined us for ten minutes, before moving on to someone else.
It was very interesting and I certainly enjoyed it and, especially for those who like football, they did as well.
In addition to talking about the things that I did, I also took along some football memorabilia with me.
I have quite an extensive collection of items that I have gathered during my time working in the beautiful game and, the angle that I was coming from was that those items have all been given to me by people, footballers especially, who also work in the game.
The point that I was making is that education and qualifications are absolutely vital to progression in a career but, equally so, if not more so, character is very important indeed.
I asked the question to all the children that if I didn’t get on with people, if people didn’t like me, or if I didn’t like them, would I still have all those items given to me and they all replied ‘no’.
Education is very important but never neglect the value of character in terms of getting on in life.
