🐀 I bought a gun and I’ve made my first kill

Fortunately, we don’t get too many rats in the garden, but nevertheless like everyone else, from time to time we do get one that seems to hang around.

You have to deal with the problem though because, before you know it, you will be swamped.

They are prolific breeders and not only spread disease, which is not good news obviously, but they are extremely destructive.

Get one in your home and they can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage.

You can trap them, although I’ve never had much success, as they seem to steal the bait without getting caught.

Poisoning works but it does cause a lot of suffering.

Plus, with both methods, other creatures, such as hedgehogs, can also end up being killed.

A third way is to shoot them.

We’ve had a brown rat visiting beneath the bird feeding station daily for a while, so I decided to try the gun option.

I bought a Browning Buck Mark URX pistol yesterday and this morning, when the rat put in an appearance, I inserted a pellet, focused and shot.

I killed it instantly, with the pellet hitting the head. It recoiled and died immediately.

I haven’t shot a gun for years, so was quite proud of my aim, as I didn’t spend any time practising.

In fact, I won’t be getting the gun out again until I see another rat.
