❄️ Blogging in January 2025

🎣 Fishing the Shropshire Severn and more retirement-related good news

You can never have too much of a good thing and, for the second day on the bounce, I was back on the middle Severn in pursuit of chub.

You couldn’t call it warm – the temperature was 5C – but dressed properly it felt very mild indeed.

As a result, even with just a minimal raise in water temperature, I went for a totally different tackle approach compared to the recent Severn sessions.

There was just one other angler on the stretch that I fished.

Phil from Clee Hill, it was great to meet you, and I hope you caught when you moved to the other bank.

As for me, I blanked.

However, I’m back on the Severn tomorrow (Thursday) when I’ll be fishing the BAA Danery stretch.

There you go, the information that, if you only watch YouTube videos, you will be blissfully unaware of!

Finally, as for the good news, it follows on from my blog post about retirement and, in particular, the car costs.

The latest one is that my insurance renewal was reduced by 20% because I’m retired.

Less miles and no commuting.

More fishing though. Lots more.

Tackle

Fox Barbel Special 1.5 test curve rod and an Okuma Zeon reel. The reel was loaded with 6lb Maxima Chameleon, with a ten-inch hook-length created by a small shot and an 5mm bead. Above that was a Drennan mini cage feeder (15g), packed with brown crumb and red/white maggots. The bait was two white maggots on a size 14 Drennan Super Specialist hook.

Nature notes

Several cormorants. Several goosanders. Female sparrowhawk in low flight across the river.
