🎣 🌲 Fishing for roach and a birding walk in Cotwall End Valley
Although it was a very pleasant day once the sun rose, first thing it was a case of scraping ice before I could leave the drive to go fishing.
I knew it was going to be a challenge and, that’s why you have to think your sessions through, especially at this time of the year.
Targeting roach on a small pool, I knew I had a good chance of catching and that proved to be the case.
Nothing big but a steady trickle of action during the short session.
Tackle and bait: Greys Prodigy TX 12’ rod. Shimano 3500M reel. Maxima Chameleon 4lb line. Drennan 1.2g float. Drennan Super Specialist size 16 hook.
I fished a couple of rod-lengths out, in six feet of water, over brown crumb and red/white maggots, with two red maggots on the hook, just off a sharp drop-off.
Nature notes: Pair of stock doves in mating ritual and visiting an established nesting site. Although a cold start to the day, very spring-like once the sun rose, which obviously had an impact on the birds.
Once home, and while still in my fishing clothes, I went for a birding walk in the valley.
It was a very pleasant stroll along the golf course and back down the lane and I added three new birds for the year.
