🍁 September 2024

A short angling session to start the day, the weather and 1,107 consecutive weeks

🎣 Back on the pool in pursuit of perch

It was a breezy start to the day, but the pool that I am fishing of late is largely sheltered from the wind, certainly as far as certain directions are concerned.

That’s where it’s good to know your venue and to give specific places consideration during times of excess weather conditions.

On this occasion, although the breeze was very audible as it made its way through the tree tops, the surface of the pool remained relatively calm.

The pool is surrounded by both higher ground and dense trees, the combination of which ensures that it’s a great place to fish, when perhaps other spots aren’t.

As you can see in the video, I caught perch and roach early on.

Then, a pike moved in.

I still caught, but everything slowed down, as you would expect.

Filmed at the water’s edge and, as well as the fish caught, there are wider thoughts shared.

🪱 Tackle, bait and tactics

Greys Prodigy TX 12’ rod. Shimano 3500M reel. Maxima Chameleon 4lb line.

Drennan 1.2g waggler. Drennan Super Specialist size 10 hook.

A sharp drop-off from the margins, so fishing in six-feet of water, just off the rod tip.

I presented a single prawn and, due to the depth of water, I created a firm groundbait mix which contained loose maggots and prawns.

🦆 Nature notes while fishing

A pair of grey wagtails in undulating flight across the pool. They are resident on this particular venue.

Kingfisher in low flight just above the surface of the water, from one end of the pool to the other, and then it moved on.

Two sightings, probably the same bird.

I heard them before I saw them, as four ring-necked parakeets flew into woodland.

💻 1,107 consecutive weeks

For the vast majority of people, as far as the start of a week is concerned, they probably relate to Monday, as it is the beginning of the working week.

When it comes to my blogging though, Saturday is the day for me.

I first published Stewart Bloor’s Angling Journal, as it was then known, way back in July 2003.

It has evolved over the years but, the most important thing is, that it’s still going strong.

Today is the 1,107th consecutive Saturday that I have published a post.
