🎣 Three species of fish from the Staffs/Worcs Canal and talking about angling on Bayside Radio
Although we’ve had glimpses so far in September, today was the first full-on indication that we are actually in autumn. Not quite a blanket covering but, certainly as far as low-lying areas were concerned, pockets of dense fog were clearly visible.
As you can see at the start of the video, the Staffs/Worcs Canal was also affected, although even as I made my way along the towpath, it was evaporating. Like sunrises and sunsets, nature’s displays come and go quickly.
I knew the fishing would be tough and you can say that again. I knew the fishing would be tough. I can’t remember the last time I had cold toes when angling. Obviously, the sharp drop in overnight air temperature was going to have a bearing upon proceedings.
After a very slow start, I managed to finally get a fish on the bank. The roach was followed by gudgeon and perch, so come the end of the couple of hours on the bank, it wasn’t too bad after all.
It’s always important to see the big picture when it comes to angling catches and, although both quality and quantity were well down on recent sessions, nevertheless I was happy enough at the final whistle.
In spite of the conditions, I saw a butterfly. I only got a brief glimpse, as it disappeared over the far bank trees. I didn’t even see any colour, it was just a silhouette against the sky but, looking at it, it was the size of a large white.
Once home, I showered and changed and was ready for my weekly thirty-minutes chat with Jeff Pearson, where we talk angling for his afternoon show on Bayside Radio. Based in Colwyn Bay, the programmes go out around the world via the internet.
