Blogging life’s journey: August 2025

🏡 It might be a bank holiday but…

I must confess that, since I retired, every day feels like a bank holiday, so I don’t treat the real ones differently to any other normal day.

This one though – the last of the year until we hit Christmas – saw me doing traditional bank holiday things.

Taking advantage of the lovely, dry and sunny conditions, I did some outside work around the home. With rain on the way tomorrow, it was important to catch up with the jobs that needed doing.

I mowed both lawns and trimmed the edges. Not that the grass was green and lush but there were patches that needed taking down. It’s all looking good now, as I await the rain that will restore it as far as colour is concerned.

While I did that, my wife stained the final garden fence panel. That wraps up that particular project.

I also did some work on the garage door and frame, tidied the block paving at the front of our home and weeded the front wall and gutter in the street. Having done weeding recently, it didn’t take much effort, which is why my principle of ‘little and often’ is a good one.

One project that I wasn’t able to complete though, was repairing the canopy outside the back door, which drips when it rains. I cleaned the roof and identified cracks in the felt.

We visited a couple of DIY stores in the afternoon, but the product I needed wasn’t stocked, so a trip to a larger B&Q warehouse will be on the cards in the near future.

Still, a very productive and rewarding day.
