One, two, but not quite three: Species of fish on the bank, that is
🎣 An early start pursuing perch with prawn
I do find that my body clock responds very quickly to change and, for a while now, I’ve been doing early morning starts in pursuit of perch on a small pool.
Without even needing the alarm – which I do set anyway – my body has been waking itself, in advance of the iPhone next to my bed breaking out in song.
Although I’ve been going through the same routine – not just pre-fishing but also while at the waters edge – it is anything but tedious or repetitive.
Every time I go, I still have that freshness and anticipation as to what lies ahead.
The one common denominator though is pike in the swim.
I wish that they weren’t there, but they are, and so therefore I just work around the situation and get on with things.
On this session, I caught both roach and perch and almost made it three species, as you can see in the video.
The dreaded hook-pull, eh.
🪱 Tackle, bait and tactics
Greys Prodigy TX 12’ rod. Shimano 3500M reel. Maxima Chameleon 4lb line.
Drennan 1.2g waggler. Drennan Super Specialist size 10 hook.
A sharp drop-off from the margins, so fishing in six-feet of water, just off the rod tip.
I presented a single prawn and, due to the depth of water, I created a firm groundbait mix which contained loose maggots and prawns.
🦆 Nature notes while fishing
Two sightings of two very vocal ring-necked parakeets in flight, followed by six birds also very vocal and in flight.
Grey wagtail perched for some considerable time on an overhanging branch.
Calling raven circled the pool.

Filmed at the water’s edge, as well as the fish landed, I also happened to be recording when I had the hook-pull, so there’s spontaneous reaction to that.
I also go through the tackle used in the session.
