Blogging life’s journey: June 2025

🎣 First brook session of the new season and my second species plus thrilled to spot a new mammal for the area

From the mighty River Severn to one of its tiny contributing waterways in just a few hours, but it’s all fishing and it’s all good.

My first brook session of the new season saw me heading to a familiar section.

It’s very shallow and clear and there aren’t many spots where fish are present, so location is crucial.

With the brook being shallower than normal due to the conditions, I knew it wasn’t going to be prolific, therefore I was happy with a few three-spined sticklebacks.

The biggest was 3.3g so a nice fish indeed.

Tackle: Poachers Pocket mini-rod and reel. Reel line was 4lb Maxima Chameleon straight through. A small shot was nipped on the line, four inches from the Drennan Super Specialist size 16 hook. Bait was a single white maggot, which I nipped with scissors.

Nature notes: Chiffchaff singing in the immediate area alongside the brook. Roe deer in a meadow, as I made my way back to the car. It was at some distance so I couldn’t film it but I wasn’t able to watch it for some time. There are muntjac in the area but this was my first roe deer and I was thrilled.
