Blogging life’s journey: July 2025

The Champions League is back but not the result I wanted and a lake tench session

While many followers of football think that the Champions League really begins in autumn, when the big boys join the fray, for me, in many ways, I am more of a fan of the early stages.

Like its predecessor, the European Cup, that’s when the champions only are involved.

My first engagement with the competition this season didn’t go my way, as Shelbourne  beat Linfield (the team I follow in Northern Ireland) over two legs.

Last night’s game, which I watched on the BBC website, was an exciting encounter. Just not the right result, that’s all.

After a good night’s five hours of quality sleep, I was up nice and early to go fishing.

Back on ‘the tench lake’, I had roach in front of me from the off, as I fished at 20 yards over brown crumb and sweetcorn.

Although I had lots of plucks, all I had to show for the first hour was one roach.

At least I wasn’t going to be a blanker.

The second hour was even slower. Just a few rod taps but no fish at all on the bank.

Hour three. Ditto.

Hour four was better. Sort of. I did connect with three tench but only netted one.

The final hour ended with one roach and, right at the death, a nice tinca.

Then, once home, I had a chat with my wife, which is in the video.

Tackle: Fox Barbel Special 1.5 test curve rod and an Okuma Zeon reel. 6lb Maxima Chameleon, with a six-inch hook-length created by a small shot and a bead. Above that was a 1/2 ounce bomb. Size 12 Drennan Super Specialist hook.

Nature notes: Pair of coots with four reasonably well-developed juveniles. Single juvenile moorhen on its own. Grey heron in flight. Calling oystercatcher passed through.
