The weather, a tench angling session, school holidays and three Bedlington terriers
The weather has certainly turned in the last day or so.
Whether for better or worse is a matter of personal opinion, but it’s farewell heatwave and hello cooler and wetter. That’s a fact.
The rain is good for the garden though, so very welcome indeed as far as I’m concerned.
There was a time when gardening didn’t even enter my mind, whereas now it’s a big part of my life.
Over time, we change and evolve, don’t we?
As far as my own angling is concerned though, it’s business as usual, and once again, I was up for an early assault on ‘the tench lake’.
Fishing a grain of sweetcorn over a bed of brown crumb and corn at 25 yards, I got off to a flying start, with an early tinca in the landing net.
I added a small roach shortly afterwards – which flipped out of my hand and in the water before I could video it – but at the four-hour mark, that was all I had to show for my endeavour.
I stayed for a further thirty minutes and caught another small roach. This time I captured the evidence.
Tackle: Fox Barbel Special 1.5 test curve rod and an Okuma Zeon reel. 6lb Maxima Chameleon, with a six-inch hook-length created by a small shot and a bead. Above that was a 1/2 ounce bomb. Size 12 Drennan Super Specialist hook.
Nature notes: Herring gull low over the water, occasionally dropping on the surface to investigate further. Grey heron in the margins. An active great crested grebe. Sand martins c.6 passing through, low over the lake.
As mentioned in the video, with the schools breaking up yesterday, today is the first full day of the summer holidays.
As a child, I used to love the extended break. On day one, September seemed so far away.
However, in no time at all, it was autumn and back to a new academic year.
As you can also see in the video, Roscoe and Winnie the Bedlington terriers put in an appearance, albeit just a mention for the latter.
They are my favourite breed of dog and I always home in if I see one when I’m out and about.
Dilwyn is my third Bedlington – the other two were Baloo and Twinkle – and talking of the main man himself, I didn’t want him to feel left out, so he featured in the video himself once I arrived home.
