Blogging life’s journey: July 2025

Some philosophical thoughts to start the working week, tench fishing on a lake and talking angling on Bayside Radio

It only seems like yesterday that I was writing a blog post that began, along the lines of… Starting the working week fishing…

Well, here I am seven days later, and it does feel like groundhog day, as opposed to week.

Life really does fly by, doesn’t it? Blink and you miss it. That’s why I’m always focused on making the most of every day that I have.

Which is also why I’m not on social media. My last job involved posting on the likes of Facebook, Instagram and X, so I couldn’t exactly get away from it.

Now that I don’t have to, I don’t.

I do have a guestbook on here though, so although options are limited, I’m not exactly a social hermit.

Back to the fishing though and it was another early start on the tench lake, fishing with sweetcorn over brown crumb and corn at twenty yards.

Although I had roach in the swim, the first hour was fish-less. Then, as soon as the bait hit the water, it was picked up by a tinca.

I got that one in front of the camera, although the second one slipped the hook.

You can follow the session via the video.

Tackle: Fox Barbel Special 1.5 test curve rod and an Okuma Zeon reel. 6lb Maxima Chameleon, with a six-inch hook-length created by a small shot and a bead. Above that was a 1/2 ounce bomb. Size 12 Drennan Super Specialist hook.

Nature notes: Several swifts throughout the session, feeding over the lake. Most at one time: five. Common sandpiper in low flight over the water. Four well-developed young coots. Adult great crested grebe, followed around by a noisy juvenile.

The session lasted three hours, and so it was good that I did catch in that time, because I couldn’t have stayed any longer, even if I wanted to.

It was my weekly Bayside Radio angling chat with Jeff Pearson, mid-morning, and there’s footage from that in the video.
