Not that I’m celebrating as such but it’s seven months today, a tench session and some natural world goodies for my grandson
I don’t mark the date as anything special, in the sense that I celebrate it, but once we hit the 22nd on the calendar, I am reminded that it’s another month since I retired.
Ghanaians have their March 6, for citizens of the USA it’s July 4, and it’s September 16 as far as Mexicans are concerned.
Mine is December 22.
My car celebrates as well. In seven months, I’ve driven 3,352 miles, which works out at 479 per month and a miserly 5,746 miles per year.
I’m enjoying the tench lake challenge and that’s where I began the day, fishing sweetcorn over brown crumb and corn.
In a three-hour session, I had two lost fish (hook-pulls) and a few roach.
This time last year, I was catching so many decent tincas that I was looking forward to the end of August, so that I could move on to other species!
Not now though, it’s a totally different ball game altogether.
I do like a challenge, however, and that’s why I keep returning.
Plus, I do catch more tench than I have species blanks, so it’s not exactly the impossible dream. Just tougher than previous years, that’s all.
Tackle: Fox Barbel Special 1.5 test curve rod and an Okuma Zeon reel. 6lb Maxima Chameleon, with a six-inch hook-length created by a small shot and a bead. Above that was a 1/2 ounce bomb. Size 12 Drennan Super Specialist hook.
Nature notes: Adult great crested grebe and juvenile feeding. The four coot juveniles continue to grow and they’re well past the stage where a pike would take them. Single sand martin passed through.
My grandson is very happy today and you can see why in the video.
He loves nature and, in fact, reminds me very much of myself when I was his age.
His box of nature goodies is an example of how, by getting on well with people, they are more likely to want to do things for you.
