🎣 An enforced change of plan but still fishing the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal
Today’s angling session was on the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal, and that went ahead, but with a slight change of plan on the journey.
After leaving home, as I approached the traffic lights at the intersection of the B and A roads, I saw a long row of red lights to the left, which was the route I was intending to take.
Roadworks, I thought to myself – especially as I had encountered a clogged road in the same area yesterday – and causing a lot of delay as well but the looks of it.
No problem, I went straight ahead and fished a different stretch instead. It’s not as if there are hotspots as such. I’m happy to drop anywhere. It’s all good.
So, Swinfon it was, instead of Gothersley. You can see the section that I chose, from the video. It’s a popular stretch – for obvious reasons – but I’ve heard many anglers say that they have found it’s nowhere near as good as it used to be.
After today’s session, and based on the fact I blanked, I can understand where they’re coming from. In fact, I have fished there occasionally in recent years and what I caught usually didn’t match the expectations.
Today, I float-fished towards the far bank reed bed, with a couple of maggots on a size 16 hook. The set-up was my usual and I baited the swim with brown crumb and red/white maggots. I did have a couple of dips on the float but, after three hours, I remained fish-less.
