🎣 The big one that got away and the small ones that didn’t
After a mild start to the new year, January 2 was a different proposition altogether, as I was scraping deep-set ice from the car windows before I could leave the drive.
These are the conditions where target species is an important factor and, on that front, I continued to pursue roach.
On a small pool, they didn’t let me down.
Nothing big, but then again that’s the nature of the beast on that venue.
The one that got away?
Well, that was a decent bream that shed the hook just inches away from the submerged landing net.
It’s the way it goes sometimes, isn’t it?
Fished three rod-lengths out, in five feet of open water, over brown crumb and red/white maggots, with two white maggots on the hook.

Greys Prodigy TX 12’ rod. Shimano 3500M reel. Maxima Chameleon 4lb line. Handmade 3” float. Drennan Super Specialist size 16 hook.
Nature notes
Two resident moorhens on the pool. Ring-necked parakeets very vocal in adjoining woodland. Saw four. Song thrush feeding on grass when I returned to my car.
