And now, the end is near

A few fish from the session.

As the year begins its draw to a conclusion, so does my 2023 angling.

I’m enjoying my pond sessions and that’s how I intend to say farewell to the last 365 days.

The start of 2024 is going to be very different.

More of that in due course though, for now I was up for a first light visit to a small venue that is heavily populated with roach.

They’re mostly just a few ounces in weight but every now and then a decent (relatively speaking) fish puts in an appearance,

That’s why I fish with the approach that I do, plus even the smaller ones aren’t hook shy.

I fished the deepest area of the pond, which has four feet of water to cast at.

The shot was either side of the float and I loose fed maggots, fishing one rod-length from the bank.

Hook bait was two white maggots.

It took me a while to net the first roach and then it went quiet again.

As I expected, there was a very active pike in the area.

I still managed to catch though but nothing to better the initial fish banked.

Tackle: Greys Prodigy TX 12’ rod. Shimano 3500M reel. Maxima Chameleon 4lb line. Drennan 0.6g waggler. Drennan Super Specialist size 14 hook.

Nature notes: A cormorant landed briefly on the pond. Flock of c.10 long-tailed tits passed through. Brief sighting of two ring-necked parakeets in flight. Male sparrowhawk passed over the pond.
