The final angling session of the year
Happy New Year’s Eve!
My final angling session of 2023 was on a small pond and was at first light.
The former was by choice but the latter by necessity, as I only had a short window of opportunity due to a working football game later.
As I’ve stated on many occasions, that’s a big plus when you keep your rods assembled and ready to go.
It means you can get lots more sessions in because you’re making the most of limited time.
The pool was coloured due to recent heavy rains but I know from experience that it wouldn’t bother the roach.
The water I fished was three feet deep and as I set the rod up, I also threw loose maggots in.
Sometimes the fish are, other times you have to draw them in but they’re never far away.
It is a pond after all.
I had a roach first cast, so at least I didn’t see the year out as a blanker.
My first fish of the year – on January 1 – was a roach and it was also the last species I caught as well, which is the second one on the video.
The action on the pond was regular but it’s not just about the fishing.
Being out there in the great outdoors and at one with nature, is something that we should always value as anglers and never take for granted.
Nature notes: Grey heron attempted to land alongside the pond, saw me and flew away.
