A short morning session on a pool

An all-roach catch from a pool.

With my wife planning to go Christmas shopping later in the morning, I thought I’d go for an early start as far as fishing was concerned.

Targeting a pool, the water under the rod tip was six feet deep, so after casting out with a plummet there was only slight adjustment required following the previous canal session.

That’s the beauty of keeping your rods made-up, they’re ready to go and you’re fishing in no time at all when you arrive at the water’s edge.

I kept the small shot, that was about four inches from the hook, in place from the canal trip and again mixed brown crumb and maggots, with two white maggots as the bait.

Although a canal and a pool are different, there are also lots of similarities.

My approach is always to keep it simple – and it works.

I caught lots of roach on this occasion, with the best fish in the lead image on the video.

Tackle: Greys Prodigy TX 12’ rod. Shimano 3500M reel. Maxima Chameleon 4lb line. Drennan 0.6g waggler. Drennan Super Specialist size 14 hook.

Nature notes: A brief glimpse of a calling raven over nearby woodland. I didn’t see them but I heard at least two ring-necked parakeets, also in the wooded area. Three resident moorhens on the pool.

  1. Hi Stewart, I work in Aldridge and have seen and heard Ring neck parakeets regularly over the last few weeks, Also saw a flock of about 10 flying over near Walsall Arboretum (heard them first) very vocal birds. Seems they are becoming quite common now. Merry Christmas to you and yours Stewart.. Jim.

    1. Hello, Jim.
They’re definitely becoming more abundant in the wider area.
I know the Express & Star did a feature recently with lots of reports in there.
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Have a great time.

    1. Nice hotel there Stewart, even though it resembles a maze inside, don’t know if I’d find my way out of there he he. And right by the marina too, lovely view, shame you can’t fish there, enjoy 😁 x

      1. Hello, Debby!
It’s great, it’s one of those places where I think to myself, I’d love to bring my wife here.
I slept with the curtains open, what a lovely sight to wake up to.

      2. P.S. I found the flotels on my walk. Perfect fishing from the deck.
        Get your bags packed.

          1. Or a non-fishing wife’s nightmare!
See you later tonight, I’m ten minutes away from Haverfordwest then it’s all focused for a few hours!
