Beverly Hillbillies TV series review (1963) and two things that caught my eye
Beverly Hillbillies TV series review: Series two, episodes 1-14 (1963). The two things mentioned in the heading are in the video.
Starring Buddy Ebsen (as Jed Clampett), Irene Ryan (as granny), Donna Douglas (as Elly May Clampett) and Max Baer Jr (as Jethro Bodine).
Jed Gets the Misery
In order to make granny feel appreciated, Jed pretends to be sick, so that she can doctor him.
In his nightclothes, Jed is joined in bed by Mr. Drysdale and the real doctor (Dr. Clyburn), as granny becomes very focused and intense, mixing her potions intent on curing all three men.
Hair-Raising Holiday
After trimming the hair of all three men in the last episode, Clyburn is determined to get granny punished but Drysdale is worried the Clampetts will withdraw their money from the bank.
Then they find out that, care of granny’s magic poultice, Jed’s hair has miraculously grown back. They both get the same treatment and experience.
Looking forward to celebrating Possum Day, Drysdale has to organise an event, to keep the Clampetts on board.
Granny’s Garden
Granny gets it into her head to plough the lawn at the front of the mansion and grow crops.
Mr. Drysdale tries his hardest to stop the progress and Jane takes the Clampetts to the market to see how easy it is to buy food rather than grow your own.
Elly Starts To School
In order to get rid of the Clampetts, Mrs. Drysdale enlists Elly May at a very posh school in the hope that it will discourage them when she’s ostracised by the other girls.
However, Miss Hathaway catches on to her plan and arrives at the school first and makes out that Elly May is a rich trend-setter.
Befriending a girl (Cynthia Fenwick) and her very rich mom, the Clampetts think she’s poor, so they load their truck with furniture to donate to them. Mrs. Drysdale thinks they’re finally going and helps them.
The Clampett Look
Following on from the previous episode, the Fenwicks dress up in the clothes given to them by the Clampetts, believing them to be the next fashion to hit Hollywood.
Mrs. Drysdale thinks they’re the cleaning ladies and gets into a fight with Mrs. Fenwick.
Their chauffeur drives them home but the Clampetts think he’s a rich man who has kidnapped them.
Jethro’s First Love
Wanting to start courting so that he can find himself a wife, Jethro visits the bank and meets Chickadee Laverne, a burlesque artist. Jed told him when you meet the right girl, you hear music.
He doesn’t know it’s the radio playing so thinks she’s the one. She goes back to the mansion thinking the ‘engagement’ is a performance but when she realises they are millionaires, she becomes interested.
Mr. Drysdale and Miss Hathaway step up to rescue Jethro.
Chickadee Returns
Following on from the previous episode, Chickadee Laverne returns to the Clampetts’ mansion. She’s returning for what she believes is her dancing engagement but they think it’s for her upcoming marriage with Jethro.
In the end it’s because Jethro thinks she can’t cook that he loses interest.
The Clampetts Are Overdrawn
A mistake at the bank means that the Clampetts receive a letter saying they are overdrawn. Meanwhile, an unemployed actor by the name of Jake Clampett, gets his hands on their fortune.
The Clampetts think that Mr.Drysdale wants them out of town now they’re poor, but Miss Hathaway sorts it out. The other Clampetts try to con Jed and his family by saying they’re related.
The Clampetts Go Hollywood
Under the spell of ‘cousin’ Jake Clampett, the family falls for his spin that he’s going to make them movie stars (using their money). All except for Jed though.
It’s through Jed that Mr. Drysdale and Miss Hathaway finally convince them of how ridiculous they all look and act.
Turkey Day
The Drysdales are visiting the Clampetts for Thanksgiving and they send over a turkey. Once Elly May befriends it though, Jed can’t kill the bird. He wants to shoot a ‘billy ard’ (billiards) instead, as once again they get the wrong end of the stick.
Mrs.Drysdale hires two actors dressed as red indians and granny thinks they’ve come to scalp them.
The Garden Party
Mrs. Drysdale organises a garden party and, by mistake, the Clampetts think they’re invited. In order to get rid of them, they are asked to set up an overflow option.
They sit there all alone until a few guests turn up, drink granny’s punch, and before they know it , everyone relocates, as the bank plays more exciting music.
Elly Needs A Maw
Looking to get married, so that Elly May can get a mom, Jed gets the wrong end of the stick and thinks widow Fenwick wants to marry him.
When she visits the mansion for what she thinks is the sealing of a business deal, she brings her pet Bedlington terrier with her. Granny thinks it’s a lamb as a dowry.
The secretary in Mr. Drysdale’s office is Janet Trego, played by Sharon Tate, who was murdered in 1969 by the members of the Charles Manson cult.
The Clampetts Get Culture
Concerned that they don’t fit in with the Beverly Hills culture, the Clampetts decide to move back to the mountains. They turn up at the bank with four sacks, looking to withdraw their cash to take with them.
Mr. Drysdale goes into overdrive to make them feel welcome.
Christmas At The Clampetts
Mr. Drysdale buys the Clampetts some very expensive gifts that they don’t understand. For example, Granny thinks the television is a washing machine and she can’t work it out.
Granny thinks the artificial snow around the Christmas tree is real snow, and she wants to send Jethro up on the roof, to repair the hole where it’s coming in.
