Blogging Life’s Journey: December 2025

🎣 Cold, grey and murky on the Staffs & Worcs Canal on blog day

I always see Saturday as my ‘blog day’ because that was when I published my very first post. Back then, it was based on a Shropshire estate lake session. Twenty-two years and twenty-three weeks later, I was fishing the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal.

If July 5, 2003 was a lovely summer day, then December 13, 2025 was the opposite end of the spectrum. Cold, grey and murky were three words that came to mind as I looked out of the window at home, when I woke. By the time I pitched up on the towpath, nothing had changed.

I fished a new section, and walked a couple of hundred yards before going back on myself, to settle in a particular spot. You can see that in the video, as well as my reasons for the choice. Always confident, I’m also very realistic as well, and it didn’t take long to work out that it was going to be a tough session.

My tackle was the usual Greys Prodigy TX rod and Shimano 3500 reel loaded with 4 lb Maxima Chameleon. The float was a 1.2g Drennan crystal waggler and I fished the far side of the boat channel. The bait was two maggots on a size 16 Drennan Super Specialist and, of course, I had a small (size 6) anchor shot.

The whole section was totally lifeless as far as piscatorial activity was concerned. In the three hours that I fished, I didn’t even see one sign of a single fish. Welcome to winter fishing. There was still a blog post (obviously, as you’re reading this) including a video though.

Blogging life’s angling journey means that you share the bad and the indifferent, not just the good. As we know in life, never mind fishing, we don’t always live on the mountain top. Sometimes we’re on the slope and other times down in the valley. That’s life and that’s fishing.
