🎣 Dead-bait fishing for pike on the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal
Although I’m not rigid and regimental, nevertheless I do plan my angling sessions in advance. The next one is always sorted, and likewise the following few days, but with more flexibility the further you progress. Externals, such as weather changes or unexpected personal situations, all have a direct plan on fishing plans.
My intention, after a couple of days of still water angling with a float and maggots, was to return to the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal to cast a dead-bait to try and bank a pike. The so-close-but-yet-so-far one that escaped right at the net the other day was still fresh in my mind.
As I’ve stated on several occasions, when something doesn’t go your way – in life, never mind angling – you can either give in or come back even more determined. Hence, that’s why I was on the towpath first thing in the morning, looking to do business with Esox lucius.
I fished two rods, both with small sprats on a size 4 treble hook beneath a float. However, for as much as I was confident, I didn’t even get an enquiry, never mind a run in the 3.5 hours I fished. That’s the way it goes sometimes, especially when fishing dead-baits for pike. In fact, I’d say a lot of the time.
