It may be cold but as long as your bait’s in the water…
With two working days on the bounce, in order to do some fishing I was up for an early start on a pond.
Although it wasn’t icy thanks to the overnight cloud cover, nevertheless it was cold.
Mixing a small amount of brown crumb on arrival at the water’s edge, I didn’t need a thermometer to tell me that the abode of the fishes was also chilly as well.
This is the time of the year where species targets are important, and for me it was a case of roach, with any perch on the bank a bonus.
Flicking a small waggler a couple of lengths out, I initially put sloppy crumb in two spots, both just over two feet deep.
Then, I trickled a few maggots on each cast, in accordance with the level of activity, which actually was quite good.
It’s definitely a contender for my tombstone inscription… As long as your bait’s in the water, you’ve always got a chance.
My catch on the pond tied in with my expectations.
Lots of roach, with a number of perch sprinkled in for variety.
I also had a hook pull on a nice stripie.
Rather than disappoint me though, it inspired.
That’s the best way to look at these situations, draw positives from them rather than be dragged down by disappointments.
That’s true of life, not just fishing.
Some decent fish there Stewart on a very cold morning. And a cheeky Robin. Makes it all worthwhile.
Taking everything into account, I was quite thrilled.
Robins. The anglers’ friend. Lovely birds.
