Beverly Hillbillies TV series review: Series two, episodes 15-22 (1964)
Starring Buddy Ebsen (as Jed Clampett), Irene Ryan (as granny), Donna Douglas (as Elly May Clampett) and Max Baer Jr (as Jethro Bodine).
A Man For Elly
Now that granny has discovered television, she thinks cowboy, Quirt Manly, is real and thinks he’s the one who will tame Elly May. When he visits the mansion though, she is disappointed to discover that he’s small, shy and weak.
When he lets Jethro drive his car, Jethro ends up with numerous girls after him because they think he’s Quirt.
The Giant Jackrabbit
Running out of food that they can shoot, the Clampetts turn to Beverly Caterers, who they think is a person. As always, they get the wrong end of the stick and the resultant mayhem is funny.
Meanwhile, granny comes across a kangaroo that someone has sent to the Drysdales as a joke, and she thinks it’s a giant jackrabbit.
The Girl From Home
Lafe Crick arrives from ‘back home’ with his daughter Essiebelle, as he tries to set her up for a wedding with Jethro. However, he’s only after the Clampetts’ money and Jed is switched on, so it comes to an abrupt end.
Skipper, the chimpanzee, is still part of the cast and a regular feature.
Lafe Lingers On
Still determined to get his hands on Jed’s money, Lafe Crick returns, claiming that his daughter left him and he’s in need of hospitality.
He talks his way in to getting a job at the bank as a night watchman, thinking he can steal Jed’s money in the process. When he realises that he won’t actually be sitting on the cash itself though, he’s surprised.
The Race For Queen
Granny wants a root cellar for her vegetables but everywhere Jethro digs, he finds oil. Jed isn’t happy because he says they’ll only give him more money, so he asks them not to tell anyone.
Mrs. Drysdale wants Elly May to run for a beauty queen contest, so she can travel the world and take the other Clampetts with her. When granny hears, she thinks it’s a race to see who becomes the queen of Beverly Hills. In the end, the judge takes a fancy to a girl, who he announces as the winner.
Lafe Returns
Lafe Crick still hasn’t given up on locating Jed’s money, which he thinks is buried in the ground. He turns up with a pawpaw tree as a gift for granny, so that he can dig a hole and locate the cash.
Meanwhile, Jed wants a husband for Elly May and Mr. Drysdale sends around an eligible bachelor from the bank.
Son Of Lafe Returns
Continuing with his pursuit of Jed’s money, this time Lafe brings his son, Dud, so that he can marry Elly May.
Dud is extremely dumb and the courting never even gets off the ground.
The young man from the bank, who the Clampetts think is called Simply, is still around, but thinks Elly May wearing granny’s clothes from when she was young, is a step too far to come to terms with.
The Clampetts Go Fishing
Mr. Drysdale arranges for the Clampetts to go deep sea fishing and buys them a rod and reel. The Clampetts think the reel is a fishing machine.
They decide to go off on their own and head for the Marine Lake, where granny wants to catch a whale. All they end up with though, is a baby seal, which Elly May brings back to add to her collection of critters.
