An afternoon on the River Severn in pursuit of barbel
In my last blog post, I mentioned how many miles I had driven in the last ten months. Well, after publishing the entry, I added another 26.2 because I went fishing on the middle Severn. That’s my drive to river side (30 metres walk) car parking and back again.
Fishing a couple of rods, although I didn’t catch a barbel (my target species), I did hook a nice chub, which unfortunately I lost in overhanging vegetation.
There were no more bites of the cherry and so, come the end of the five-hour session, I registered a blank. As always though, I enjoyed being out and about at the water’s edge, especially as it’s been a while since I fished the Severn.
It’s always helpful to bring your sessions into perspective as well. There were two other barbel anglers on the stretch, who had both been there a lot longer than me. They chatted on the way back to the car and neither of them had caught anything either.
I saw a red kite over the village where I fished, as I drove to the river. Several ravens were heard while fishing but just the one seen. Three kingfishers were spotted, likely to be the same bird.
