Perch fishing on the Staffs/Worcs Canal and nature thinks it’s spring
With the days getting shorter, I was in with the early work-related traffic as I made my way to fish the Staffs/Worcs Canal. With roadworks on the A449 – plus three-way temporary lights – I had a lengthy delay in reaching my destination.
Whether driving or life itself, whatever problems you encounter, you always navigate them eventually. However, when I finally parked the car, the day was much lighter than my original first-light intention.
Especially at this time of the year, swim selection is important, and I set up beneath a towering pedunculate oak, with branches spanning the canal.
The canal fishing has definitely slowed down in recent visits, as we move on in the year and the conditions change. Hence the added importance of swim selection, tackle, bait and species targeted.
As long as your bait’s in the water though, you’ve always got a chance and I caught a few of my target species and one roach, with the biggest perch coming right at the end of the 2.5 hours session.
The mild spell continues and, on the way home, I saw a green alkanet in bloom alongside the road. The natural world thinks it is spring. We will all find out soon enough that it isn’t but, in the meantime, enjoy the conditions while they last.
