Perch fishing on the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal, it’s great to see gudgeon making a comeback, talking angling on the radio and keeping the tackle organised
When I went to bed late Sunday evening, it wasn’t my intention to fish the following morning. However, my body has got itself into a routine and so, at 5.30 a.m., I was wide awake, and I didn’t exactly need to persuade myself what the next step was either.
A good practice that I have, is that I’m well-organised as far as my fishing tackle is concerned. I know where everything is and I can go to it immediately. Therefore, in no time at all, the car was loaded while the kettle was boiling and, after making a flask of tea, I was on my way.
I’ve fished the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal a lot in recent weeks and that was my destination this morning as well. I’ve got, quite literally, miles of water to have a go at in easy travelling distance from home. Plus, they’re rural miles as well, which beats battling the urban traffic.
You can follow the session – where I caught gudgeon and perch – via the video. Although the latter was my target species, it was great to bank a few of the former. They were the dominant species in the canal when I was young. Then they disappeared. Now they’ve made a comeback. Great.
It was always going to be a short session of a couple of hours, as I was booked for my weekly Bayside Radio angling chat at 10.00 a.m. with Jeff Pearson. The studio is based in Colwyn Bay, and the fishing slot goes out every Thursday, as part of the afternoon show.
Talking of organising my fishing tackle, after I finished recording I spent some time doing exactly that. Although I’m always on the ball and know where everything is, that’s only because I don’t let things slip. It’s easy to create chaos, especially when you arrive home late, it’s dark and wet and you unload the car as quickly as you can.
