🎣 Fishing in January 2026: A review of the month

As far as angling prospects were concerned, the new year got off to the worst possible start, as an extremely cold spell descended across the whole of the country. Not only was it a case of finding somewhere to fish but also how to get the car off the drive.

However, even though it was backs-to-the-wall, I managed to fish throughout the tough conditions, and that has continued right through to the end of the month. I’ve been every day of January and, going back in time, I have been out on the bank daily since December 21, 2024.

After the extremely slow start, I had to wait until January 7 to catch my first fish of the new year, which was a chub from a brook. The final one of the month was a roach from a pool on January 30. Sandwiched in between there were six other species.

bream, bullhead, carp (mirror), chub, dace, gudgeon, perch, roach.
