Not ideal conditions but, as long as your bait’s in the water…

Some of the fish from the session.

No wonder the British talk about the weather a lot.

The pond that I fished was covered in ice yesterday and was crystal clear.

A day later, heavy overnight rain had melted about half of the surface but the downside was the sediment washed in via a feeder brook.

However, it’s that that principle again, isn’t it?

As long as your bait’s in the water, you’ve always got a chance.

The spot I fished was shallow – about two feet deep – and I knew it would be a challenge, courtesy of not only the murky water but also the ice melt.

I’m being honest and I didn’t even know I had the first fish – a perch – on.

I lifted the rod to cast again and found myself connected.

It had taken the bait and hook properly though, so it wasn’t a foul-hooked fish.

The session was short and I caught lots of roach and several perch.

I was fishing a 0.6g waggler, 4lb line and two white maggots on a size 14 hook.

To attract the fish, I mixed a small amount of brown crumb on arrival and trickled loose maggots out every time I cast.

Nature watch: A kingfisher flew across the pool.
