Working on a 60-year-old coal bunker and an evening fishing session on the Staffordshire/Worcestershire Canal
Although I’m doing a few hours a month gardening, I’m not pushing it, because I don’t want it to become like ‘work’ in the sense that I don’t feel retired.
I’m letting the opportunities find me, rather than the other way round.
With nothing planned for this week, which was great, I still thought to myself that I wouldn’t be surprised if something turned up.
That was the case and, on this occasion, my task was to dismantle the front of a 1960s coal bunker, so that it became more accessible as a garden storage unit and to tidy up around it.
Made from concrete sections, it was a challenge to loosen and remove the nuts and hinges that held everything together.
A combination of prayer, graft and WD40 did the trick though, and I got there in the end.
A couple of hours of hard work but very rewarding.
That was in the morning and, at the opposite end of the day, I went fishing.
The outing was on the Staffs/Worcs Canal and I was getting bite after bite throughout the couple of hours I was there.

Nature notes: Female mallard with two well-developed young, and as per my previous fishing trip, the only birds seen on the canal. Several carrion crows and jackdaws overhead at dusk, on their way to roost.
