Pioneering a new waterway

Footage from the session

While out on other business, I came across a waterway that caught my attention.

It’s not fished – you can see that from how overgrown everything is – and although all land belongs to someone, there are lots of places such as derelict urban sites, wasteland etc that are very different to walking across someone’s lawn or in front of a home.

I tend to think of brooks, streams and rivers as progressive in size, well this one is hard to pigeonhole because in the stretch (100m) that I walked, it could be any one of those.

‘Will there be fish in there?’, I thought to myself.

‘Of course’, was the reply.

What, how many and how big are three questions that can only be answered in one way.

Go and fish it and that’s exactly what I did.

After a very pleasant walk through the valley woodland at home with my binoculars, I had some food and set off for an into-dark session on the stream (I’m going for the middle option).

I found a nice spot on a bend, where naturally you encounter the deeper water.

I mixed some brown crumb and maggots, dropped them in and cast out.

I fished with a quiver tip rod, 6lb line straight through to a size 14 hook and created the hook length by nipping on a small shot.

A 1/8 ounce lead and a small bead completed the approach.

I caught small chub and roach.

It’s a start, so watch this space.
