Cotwall End Valley nature diary for April 2023

April 17

Another new tick for 2023 with a pair of blackcaps nest-building.

April 18

First kestrel of the year, in flight across the golf course.

Mistle thrush and song thrush on field off lane.

Mallards (3m, 2f) and moorhen on pool.

Male mallard in flight across the valley in the direction of Baggeridge Village.

April 24

Two muntjac together, disappearing into dense woodland on the eastern slope.

Male mallard on one of the many pools on the eastern slope and a female mallard preening on the brook.

A second walk later in the afternoon towards the top of the valley and back along the golf course produced at least 4 song thrushes.

Blackcap (m) and jackdaw with nesting material.

Little egret on horse fields (eastern slope) above nature reserve,

Also on fields, first rook of the year, a single feeding bird.
