Garden nature diary – November 2022

November 3

Came across two large white caterpillars, unfortunately they were surrounded by yellow cocoons.

They were victims of a parasitic wasp (Cotesia glomerata) that lays its eggs inside the caterpillar.

They eat the caterpillar alive from inside, then emerge, where they are visible as yellow cocoons.

I also saw, briefly, a butterfly in flight across a neighbouring garden.

I wasn’t able to identify it but from the glimpse I had, it looked like a red admiral.
