🎣 The coot and the tench

Currently, I’m predominantly fishing a lake for tench and it is definitely a venue of two halves, as far as the day is concerned.

Early starts are certainly more productive, as opposed to the opposite end of the hours of daylight.

This session was during the latter period and I fished in the usual manner for a couple of hours or so, with a grain of corn.

I threw a couple of balls of brown crumb and sweetcorn about twenty-five metres from the bank, cast out and waited.

The usual activity of the morning sessions – liners, feeding bubbles, plucks and taps – was absent.

I kept at it though and, after banking a coot that was diving over my bait, I caught what I came for.

The bird, by the way, was hooked in the bill and went back with just its pride dented.

Tackle: Fox Barbel Special 1.5 test curve rod and an Okuma Zeon reel. 6lb Maxima Chameleon, with a six-inch hook-length created by a small shot and an 8mm bead. Above that was a 3/8 ounce lead. Size 10 Drennan Super Specialist hook.

Nature notes: Red kite over far bank woodland, mobbed by a carrion crow. Two sand martins briefly feeding over the lake before moving on.
