Following Championship football on the internet and targeting tench on a small pool
It feels like a Saturday today, but it’s actually a day earlier (Good Friday) and with football – English Championship and beyond – being played, that has merely enforced the way my mind is working.
After Burnley’s win at Watford, which I followed at home, I went fishing where I was keeping an eye on Sheffield United’s encounter with Cardiff City.
The final score was 2-0 to the Blades, who secured the three-points that put the pressure on both Leeds United and the Clarets.
Back home, Leeds’ visit to Oxford United was the one that really grabbed my attention.
It finished 1-0 to the visitors and puts Leeds in a very strong position indeed. One foot over the line isn’t an exaggerated statement.
On a small pool, I was fishing a single grain of corn 2-3 rod-lengths from the bank in about six-feet of open water. I loose fed sweetcorn in accordance with the bites.
The target was tench, which are few and far between on the venue, to put it mildly.
It rained lightly throughout the couple of hours I was there but I actually welcomed the gentle falling of the wet stuff from above.
Not only is it good for the garden at home but, on a very practical level, it’s a big positive from an angling perspective on certain venues.
Think dogs in the swim, kids throwing stones in the water etc and you get my point.
It was a slow session initially, with just one roach on the bank.
However, I was rescued at the end by a flurry of activity.
Sadly, no tench, but they are needles in a haystack as far as that venue is concerned.
Tackle: Greys Prodigy TX 12’ rod. Shimano 3500M reel. Maxima Chameleon 4lb line. Waggler float 1g. Drennan Super Specialist size 10 hook.
Nature notes: Song thrush singing in the immediate area. Heard ( but not seen) a ring-necked parakeet. Common buzzard flew low across the pool.
