🎣 A change of angling scenery and four species of fish from a huge reservoir
A change is as good as a rest, so they say, and I certainly put that to the test when, instead of my usual small pools and ponds, I fished a big reservoir.
I have been on there before, but not for some time, so it was really nice to return.
I decided on the venue the day before and I was actually quite excited about the session.
After a bluebell walk in our local woodland, a shopping trip that involved maggots and then tidying up the garden after hundreds of petals and leaves had fallen during the previous day’s strong winds, I went fishing.
I had in mind the area that I intended to fish and in fact, apart from three anglers in the first few pegs, I had the whole of the bank – which is very extensive – to myself.
Fishing twenty-five yards out in four metres or so of water, I fished three red maggots over mixed maggots in balls of brown crumb.
It took a while for the fish to move in, then it was a bite every cast, with lots of roach, a few perch and a bream.
Then, it went quiet again. This time though, I had a pike in the swim, which after taking a fancy to the maggots on the hook, ended up in my landing net.
A very enjoyable session indeed, I loved it.
Tackle: Fox Barbel Special 1.5 test curve rod and an Okuma Zeon reel. Maxima Chameleon 6lb line and a six-inch hook-length created by a small shot and a 5mm bead. Bomb (1/2 ounce) and a size 12 Drennan Super Specialist hook.
Nature notes: Flushed two common sandpipers as I walked to my swim. Saw three further sightings of single birds later. Six cormorants on the reservoir. Female sparrowhawk flew right in front of me, low over the water, before landing in a tree further along the bank. Swallows c.60 most seen together, lots of smaller groups. Single oystercatcher calling in flight.
