Fishing in Storm Debi and as long as your bait’s in the water…

When the next storm was announced, I was hoping for Dilwyn, but I got the next best thing when it was named Debi.

While Debby was still asleep indoors, her namesake was doing its stuff outside.

Although it was the early stages, the winds were gusty at times and the rain heavy.

Where I live though, it’s not going to be as severe as other parts of the United Kingdom.

As far as angling is concerned, the show goes on and taking into account all the usual safety issues, I headed for a small pond at first light.

Due to its sheltered nature, it was very calm.

However, heavy overnight rain had taken its toll on the colour of the water, which wasn’t very good at all.

Still, as long as your bait’s in the water and all that.

I was fishing a couple of white maggots on a size 14 hook in two feet of water and, when the waggler disappeared early on, I was encouraged.

As soon as I saw the water clarity on arrival, I had already worked out that it would be more roach than perch as far as potential activity was concerned.

I missed the fish but would I get another bite of the cherry, I thought to myself.

The answer to that was yes.

I didn’t even have any indication but deciding to recast, as I lifted the rod I felt a fish on.

Unfortunately, as I brought it in, the small roach came off.

I’m getting close, I thought, but will it be a case of third time lucky, as they say?

Well, it most certainly was and I was thrilled with the fish, not because of its size but rather due to the circumstances.

This was followed by a second roach, a third… and a ninth…

It goes to show, doesn’t it, don’t worry about the conditions, just go fishing anyway.

As long as your bait’s in the water…
