Farewell, Crooked House — Fishing between the lily pads on a small pond — It’s not often you see a family of kingfishers — Church this morning

Fishing between the lily pads on a small pond

I enjoyed my last angling trip to a small pond so much, I returned there for another short session.

At first glance, it might not look fishable, due to the lilies that cover most of the surface.

However, even when you find lilies in numbers, there are inevitably spots where you can drop a float into.

Fishing close to the bank, in about two feet of water, I was able to ease the bait in between the pads.

The waggler was 0.8g, with the shot either side, so that the two white maggots on a size 14 hook sank naturally in the water and also settled more gently, as the bottom was weedy.

The plan worked, with the first cast producing a perch, which continued throughout the short session.

There were also a few roach in there, as well as my favourite species.

None of the fish were big but then again what is big? How do you define it?

Everything is relative and what might be a huge fish to one angler is an average one to another.

Plus, it’s all about the venue. Was I happy with the fish that I caught? Yes, I was and that’s all that matters.
