More tinca chasing and a reminder that fish are often closer than we realise — Sherlock Holmes 1955

A comfortable flick, even for a 1/4 ounce lead, is easily enough to place the four maggots on a size 10 hook over the baited area.

The majority of my fishing is done at close range and I was thinking about the last time I cast from behind my shoulder, as opposed to flicking the rod underarm.

It was back in March, when I was sea fishing in the Dee estuary at Talacre in north Wales.

It’s a reminder that the fish aren’t always on the horizon but they’re often closer than we realise.

I did plenty of margin sessions last year on small pools, where in many cases the water was just inches deep.
