Robert Ryan stars as Mike Ripetti.
Upon being released from prison, full of bitterness and the desire for revenge, he sets out to track down the police officer who arrested him.
He takes his wife Edie (Catherine McLeod) on a train journey with an intentional lengthy stay in Chicago.
While there he seeks out the policeman but comes across a number of people who have nothing but good things to say about him.
Unaware of the situation previously, Ripetti finds out he actually cared about people and worked behind the scenes to help them.
When he finally confronts the detective, he finds out he’s dead and in the coffin ahead of the funeral.
The gangster-types who have gathered are all like Repetti, done time but have changed.
That’s how the film ends, a changed – and happier – Mike Repetti.
