Starting the day fishing for tench, followed by a stint in the garden as another project is completed
It wasn’t my original intention but, when I woke before 6.00 a.m., instead of mid-morning lure fishing, I decided to go for tench instead.
On a lake that has been very tough so far this year as far as the species is concerned, I had lots of roach plucks from the off.
However, the first – and only – fish on the bank was my target.
I knew that I would probably only get one bite of the cherry, so was extremely happy when the tench slipped over the rim of the landing net and into the mesh.
I fished at 30 metres over brown crumb and sweetcorn, with a grain of corn on the hook.
Tackle: Fox Barbel Special 1.5 test curve rod and an Okuma Zeon reel. 6lb Maxima Chameleon, with a six-inch hook-length created by a small shot and a bead. Above that was a 1/2 ounce bomb. Size 10 Drennan Super Specialist hook.
Nature notes: Great crested grebe feeding on the lake. Ten black-headed gulls swooping on the surface after something, which they failed to get. Kingfisher passed through. Pair of coots with four young. One swift passed through. Cinnabar moth caterpillars on common ragwort.
Once home, I went to work in the garden and, with the help of my wife, painted and repaired the fence along the one side.
Since moving in, we’ve done nothing to it and so it was a long overdue project and another one I can tick off the list.
