Tough conditions on the brook but starting the angling month with a specimen stickleback on the bank
It’s not quite the drought of 1976 yet – where some parts of England went 45 days without rain – however it has been very dry for a while now, with just short spells of light rain on an occasional basis.
The brook that I’ve been fishing, which is close to the source anyway, is very low and clear and flow is down to a minimum.
Being able to observe the three-spined sticklebacks that inhabit the waterway, they have been very half-hearted when it comes to being confronted with a maggot.
On this session, which began a new month, I struggled to catch.
However, it was definitely quality over quantity, with a 4.1g monster putting in an appearance on my last cast.
Tackle: Poachers Pocket mini-rod and reel. Reel line was 4lb Maxima Chameleon straight through. A small shot on the line (which I later removed), four inches from the Drennan Super Specialist size 16 hook. Bait was a single maggot, which I nipped with scissors.
Nature notes: Vocal muntjac in the wider area. Chiffchaff singing from trees alongside the brook.
