Garden nature diary: July 2025
July 1: Pair of stock doves on the lawn. Pair of goldfinches, single goldfinch and a pair of greenfinches on the sunflower hearts feeder. Juvenile blue tits, great tits and a greenfinch on the feeding station. Male and female chaffinch on the lawn and feeder.
July 2: Juvenile blackbird, blue tits, great tits, greenfinch and robin in the garden. Female chaffinch on the ground. Stock dove beneath the feeding station. Several large whites and a comma in the garden.
July 3: Juvenile blue tits, great tits and greenfinch on the feeding station. Two female chaffinches in the garden. Small white in the garden. Female house sparrow and goldfinch on the seed feeder. Stock dove on the lawn.
July 4: Juvenile coal tit taking suet pellets. The first of the year. Other juveniles seen: blue tits, great tits, robin, blackbird. Stock dove on the lawn. Female chaffinch, greenfinch on the feeding station. Male and female blackbirds on the lawn.
July 5: Two juvenile greenfinches on sunflower hearts feeder. Juvenile blue tits, great tits, blackbird, goldfinch and robin on, or beneath, the feeding station. Adult greenfinch, goldfinches (2) and female chaffinch on sunflower hearts feeder. Several small whites in the garden. Male and female blackbirds on the lawn.
July 6: Pair of stock doves beneath the feeding station, chasing seeds as they dropped from the birds above. Juvenile blue tits, great tits, blackbird, chaffinch and robin in the garden. Two female house sparrows on the seed feeder. Lots of small whites, most seen together at one time was three. Likewise large whites, with two.
July 7: Pair of stock doves beneath the feeding station. Carrion crow flew low over the garden. Lots of juvenile blue tits and great tits continue to visit throughout the day. They usually take a seed and disappear, so hard to count exact numbers, but up to 10 birds at any one time. Juvenile robin and blackbird in the garden. Two adult greenfinches, female chaffinch in the garden. Great spotted woodpecker briefly on the nut feeder. Hedgehog in the garden.
July 8: Hedgehog in the back garden at 2.00 a.m. Pair of stock doves on the lawn early in the morning. They visit (assuming it’s the same pair, of course) regularly throughout the day but invariably there at first thing. First ring-necked parakeet of the year, heard it first and looked up from the drive as it flew towards the golf course. Juvenile blue tits, great tits, goldfinch, robin. Large whites, small whites, red admirals, peacocks and commas all in the garden.
July 9: Hedgehog in the back garden at 2.00 a.m. Juvenile blue tits and great tits in large numbers again. The feeders are emptying fast every day just with those. Juvenile robin in the garden. Large whites, small whites and peacocks enjoying the sunshine.
July 10: Greenfinches, chaffinches and goldfinches on the feeding station throughout the day. Juvenile blue tits, great tits and greenfinch in the garden. Herring gull low in the street seen from the drive. Swallow seen from the drive, low over our home and heading up the western slope. Swift late dusk over Straits. First tawny owl of the year. Sleeping with the windows open, due to the heat, I heard two birds in the immediate area. Looking through the window, one flew across the street, over our pavement.
July 11: Goldfinches, greenfinch and chafffinches on the sunflower hearts feeder. Juvenile blue tits, great tits, greenfinch and robin. Male and female blackbird. Male sparrow on the seed feeder. Female sparrowhawk flew in and, although there were birds present, after chasing them, it left without making a kill. Red admiral, comma and large white in the garden.
July 12: Female great spotted woodpecker on the nuts feeder. Peacock and comma butterflies in the garden. Juvenile blue tits and great tits. Box-tree moth on buddleia.
July 13: Carrion crow on neighbouring bungalow roof. Juvenile blue tits and great tits in numbers. Two juvenile robins in the garden. Female chaffinch on the lawn.
July 14. Female great spotted woodpecker in neighbouring garden. Juvenile blue tits and great tits continue to visit the feeding station. Female chaffinch, juvenile goldfinch and greenfinch on the sunflower hearts feeder. Male and female blackbird arrived together in the garden. Hedgehog in the back garden at 11.20 p.m.
July 15: Three magpies around the feeding station early morning. Stock dove feeding below the station. Pair of stock doves later in the day. Juvenile blue tits and great tits in abundance. Goldfinches, female chaffinch on the sunflower hearts feeder.
July 16: Chaffinches, goldfinches and greenfinches on the sunflower hearts feeder. Juvenile robin in the garden. Stock dove beneath the feeding station.
July 17: Goldfinch singing from the aerial of the bungalow below ours. A regular bird. It then flew to our sunflower hearts feeder. We get goldfinches throughout the day, most at one time today was two adults and one juvenile. Stock dove on the lawn.
July 18: Chaffinches, greenfinches and goldfinches in the garden. Magpie attacking the fat ball feeder and then eating the bits that fell on the ground.
July 19: Chaffinches, greenfinches and goldfinches on the feeding station. Juvenile blue tits and great tits continue to visit in numbers.
July 20: Chaffinches (females), goldfinches and greenfinches (adult and juvenile) on the feeding station. Juvenile blue tits and great tits continue to visit. Juvenile robin in the garden. One swift seen from the drive.
July 21: Nine swifts high over the golf course, two over the eastern slope. Great black-backed gull soaring over eastern ridge. Chaffinches (females) and goldfinches on the feeding station.
July 22: Pair of magpies on the feeding station at first-light, with one watching on. Single bird in the garden later. Chaffinches, greenfinches and goldfinches in the garden. Juvenile blue tits, great tits, chaffinch, greenfinch and goldfinch.
July 23: Pair of magpies again around the feeding station first thing. Juvenile blue tits and great tits in the garden. Female sparrowhawk flashed through the garden in the afternoon, no evidence of a kill.
July 24: Stock dove and a juvenile magpie in the garden first thing. Juvenile blue tits and great tits continue to visit the feeding station. Six magpies in the garden.
July 25: Pair of goldfinches and a greenfinch on the feeding station. Female chaffinch feeding on the ground. Juvenile blue tits and great tits. Hedgehog on the patio.
July 26: Pair of goldfinches on the sunflower hearts feeder. Large white and comma in the garden.
July 27: Stock dove, juvenile magpie and a pair of goldfinches in the garden first thing and at dusk. Three lesser black-backed gulls around the home at the end of the road, waiting for the fox food to be put out.
July 28: Pair of stock doves beneath the feeding station, single bird visited later. Juvenile blue tits, greenfinches, goldfinch, chaffinch and great tits. Adult goldfinches, greenfinches. Hedgehog in the back garden.
July 29: Stock dove in the garden. A newly-fledged wood pigeon arrived with an adult. Four very young goldfinches arrived with an adult on the feeding station. Two juvenile magpies. Female house sparrow on the seed feeder. Female sparrowhawk swooped in the garden but left with nothing.
July 30: Juvenile blue tits, great tits, chaffinches and greenfinch in the garden. Pair of calling ravens heading east to west across the valley. Female house sparrow on the seed feeder.
July 31: Single stock dove below the feeding station. Goldfinches, female chaffinch and greenfinches on the sunflower hearts feeder.
