January 2024

🎣 On the way to work and the best roach of the year so far

Life itself – never mind angling – is about making the most of every opportunity.

That’s why, in reference to fishing, when I’m at work for a non-match day, I invariably take some fishing tackle.

Although it’s looking better, the River Severn isn’t where I’d like it to be at the moment, so the Montgomery Canal it was again.

I continued with my pursuit of roach, after all you give yourself the best chance you can as far as species are concerned.

With the water temperature very low, and the conditions in general quite wintry, the roach is a realistic and sensible target.

I fished the boat channel, in water that was between five and six feet deep, and presented two white maggots over brown crumb, maggots and casters.

My plans this year are quality over quantity and that’s what I got on this session.

I netted just the one roach (I had two bites) but with it being the best fish of 2024 thus far, I was more than happy with that.

After an enjoyable couple of hours, I made my way to work.
