I’ve been keeping my eye on the River Severn water level for some time, with the intention of making a trip to the middle reaches. With it falling considerably in recent days, my plan developed legs and I was fishing at first light.

I had actually been awake several hours before. Stirring at 3.30 a.m. to be precise. Still not feeling too well, I had another exceptionally early night and so, from a time-wise perspective, I was refreshed and ready to go.

After watching the Gorton and Denton by-election declaration, I made a flask of tea, loaded the car and made my way into Shropshire. I live 5.9 miles from the county border with Staffordshire (considerably less as the crow flies) and, with them being rural miles, I’m there in no time at all.

The bank alongside the river was very muddy, and it will take time for the effects of the floods to be dealt with by dry and windy weather. We’re certainly getting plenty of the latter at the moment but not too much of the former.

As far as the session was concerned, it was quality over quantity, with two perch and one bream on the bank. Regarding the location, all I will reveal publicly is ‘the middle Severn’. I’ll do a video on location sharing during the month of March, going into reasons why I don’t.
