🎣 A slow start to the month but, in fairness, I have gone for a different approach
Four days in to a new month and, although I have been fishing every day, this is just my second piscatorial diary entry.
Even then, I only caught fish in the initial blog post, nothing on this occasion.
There’s no doubt in my mind, that if I was fishing maggots on a pool then I would have banked something, but my approach has been totally different
I’ve switched to a large lake, gone for a different tackle and bait approach and targeted bigger species.
A couple of sessions in pursuit of tench on sweetcorn have drawn blanks.
This morning, I fished with my old school friend from the sixties, Ian Clarke, and along with the two other anglers – and eight rods between us – in the adjoining swims, not one fish was caught.
I checked my blog from last year and, after a fruitless few sessions in March and early April, it was only when I returned in May that I caught my first tench.
Then, back to the present, I had a session in lake shallows after carp, fishing a lobworm on one rod but again nothing was tempted.
I’m still going to continue with the quality over quantity approach though and even when I’m on small pools I’ll go for prawn and corn etc as bait.
it doesn’t mean that I’ll never fish again with maggots, far from it, just that the intent to catch bigger (which has always been there anyway, at least in principle) is more prevalent at the moment.
That’s the great thing about fishing, isn’t it, that it can be to each one of us what we want it to be.
For many years I was a specimen angler, targeting better quality fish, and in some ways it is going back to that approach.
Hopefully with not too many blanks along the way but, as we know, the more focused we become, the more fish-less sessions you have.
It’s all about the challenge.
