Talk fishing, go fishing and the best perch of the year

My weekly Bayside Radio chats with Jeff Pearson come round so quickly.

After talking both angling and Welsh football, it was the former that I went to do myself.

I do enjoy fishing conversation on the radio but, like most things in life, it’s better to do it than just talk about it.

It was a beautiful day, as I set off for a session on a pool in pursuit of tench, casting four rod lengths from the bank and fishing a grain of sweetcorn over brown crumb and corn.

In a recent blog entry, I wrote that I had left my roach fishing behind, as I was now moving on to other species.

Well, the first fish was a roach.

And the second.

And numerous others.

Keeping the best till last though was a nice perch, in fact the biggest of the year.

Tackle: Fox Barbel Special 11’ 1.5 test curve rod and an Okuma Zeon reel loaded with 6lb Maxima Chameleon. The bomb was 3/8 ounce and the hook a size 10 Drennan Super Specialist.

Nature notes: I heard it first and then saw a ring-necked parakeet in flight. Landing in woods on the far bank, I later saw two together.
