Ice fishing…
Off to Pembrokeshire later in the morning, I started the day fishing.
With air temperatures well into minus overnight (our area was predicted -5C), I knew it was going to be a challenge anyway.
To compound that, when I arrived at the pond in question, I found that it was covered in ice.
Walking the bank, I came across one spot that wasn’t as bad, and as I was there anyway, I set up and fished.
With water just about on the right side of the line as far as casting a bait was concerned, I was able to fish, albeit under very difficult conditions.
It was a tiny patch, close to the bank and very shallow (one foot deep).
In addition, it was extremely clear, but I cast out a couple of maggots on a size 14 hook and settled back, making sure I kept a low profile.
The brown crumb I mixed froze in the tub and as soon as cast out, the ice closed in on the waggler.
However, as long as your bait’s in the water and all that…
All is revealed in the video, and while they might not have been big fish, under the circumstances it was a massive result.
Next stop, Milford Haven…
