Taking the challenge to the next level, prawn fishing for perch

The swim and tackle used

If fishing with maggots has been tough on the Staffordshire/Worcestershire Canal, then I certainly took the challenge to the next level when I fished with a prawn after perch.

The canal was ridiculously clear, so much so that you could see right across to the other side and count the leaves that had sunk to the bottom.

The section, tackle and approach are all in the video and, although I knew I was in the right place with the right set-up, nevertheless I didn’t have a bite in two hours of fishing.

I had the bait in the boat channel, and beyond, to the far bank but there was no sign of even the tiniest tap on the rod tip.

In the warmer months of the year, anglers don’t want any passing boats but there are times when one is an answer to prayer, as it stirs up the bottom and brings colour into the swim.

Although I did have one spell of flow, it was obviously a boat going away from the section I was fishing, instead of into it.

I fished over brown crumb, a few maggots and a prawn broken in pieces.

The conditions aren’t favourable at present, but they will be in time, and I’ll be back with a perch caught on prawn by design.

As they say, watch this space.
